    Description

    T
This is a fine First World War 1914-15 Star Trio to a member of the South Wales Borderers that is in excellent condition. The reverse of the star and the rims of the 1914-1918 War Medal and Victory medal are named to, ‘17036 L.CPL C.W. Jones, S. Wales Bord.’ The planchets on all three medals are nicely age toned and undamaged. The South Wales Borderers, formerly the 24th Regiment of Foot, is most remembered for its part in the Zulu War of 1879 in South Africa. There, at the disastrous engagement of Isandlwana on 22 January 1879, the Regiment lost 1500 officers and other ranks at the hands of 20,000 Zulus. There were no wounded or missing … only killed. The same day ‘B’ Company of the Regiment successfully defended the mission station at Rorke’s Drift against 4,000 Zulu Warriors in a 15-hour siege. For those two engagements, 12 members of the Regiment were awarded the Victoria Cross.  It remains a fine-looking British trio to a Regiment with a long and illustrious history.
