    Description

WWI MBE and British War Medal Group
British War Medal correctly impressed to LIEUT. F. C. DOHERTY.
    Francis Cecil Doherty
Doherty was born on November 10 1892 in Herne Hill, Surrey, England to Father William Pemble Doherty (1856-1938) and Mother Constance Bishop (1862-1936). Doherty’s Father was a Bank Manager and Mother was a Housewife. Doherty was one of 4 siblings (2 girls and 2 boys). Doherty was educated at Westminster School and Christ Church, Oxford.
Doherty was originally a Lance Sergeant from Inns of Court O.T.C. and commissioned 2ndLieutenant on June 9, 1916. Doherty served with the 1/5 Battalion Essex Regiment arriving in France in September of 1916 until he was invalided in January of 1917. He was then employed for the remainder of the war with the Ministry of Munitions for which service he was later awarded the M.B.E. (Gazette June 3, 1919).
After the war, Doherty went on to be the Assistant Master at Radley College (1921-1924), Master at King’s College School (1925-1929), Headmaster at Oakham School (1929-1934), and Headmaster at Lancing College (1934-1953). Doherty was a school administrator, but also a teacher of the classics. He also published and edited works for publication on the subject matter.
Doherty was married in September 1916 to Marjorie Banks Sargeant (1887-1958). Doherty had 3 daughters. Interestingly enough, 2 of his daughters went on to become nuns. Doherty passed away on October 20, 1959 in Cuckfield, Sussex, England. Also entitled to Victory Medal and 1911 Coronation Medal. No further research has been undertaken.
