    Medal group correctly impressed to 143021 PTE. J. F. BIRTWELL. R. A. M. C.
    John Fielding Birtwell
Birtwell was born on August 30, 1876, in Great Harwood, Lancashire, England to Father Thomas Birtwell (1844-1921) and Mother Mary Calvert (1847-1924). Birtwell’s father was a Cotton Weaver, and his mother was a housewife. Birtwell was one of 3 brothers, one of whom died in infancy. He is described as being 5’4” tall.
Birtwell married Mary Ellen Birtwistle (1879-) on May 16, 1907, in Lancashire, England. Together they had one daughter (Anne Birtwell (1910-). As of the 1911 Census, Birtwell listed his occupation as a Cotton Cloth Looker still living with his family in Great Harwood, Lancashire, England.
Birtwell attested for service as a private in the reserve with the Liverpool Regiment on December 11, 1915. He was mobilized on September 14, 1916, and subsequently transferred to the Royal Army Medical Corps (143021). Birtwell arrived in France on January 29, 1917. On June 27, 1917, Birtwell was transferred home where he would eventually be demobilized on June 27, 1919. It is unclear why Birtwell was transferred home other than pension records which indicate that he suffered from “Nephritis”. Trench Nephritis was common in WWI due to the conditions experienced by front-line troops, and it is possible that Birtwell was sent home due to this condition.
Birtwell is listed in the 1939 Census as being a retired Cloth Looker living in Blackpool Lancashire, England. He passed away in Blackpool on April 20, 1967, survived by his daughter. Also entitled to British War Medal. No further research undertaken.
