Medal group correctly impressed to 6406 PTE. J. F. ARSLETT. THE. QUEEN’S. R. John Frederick Arslett
Arslett was born June 30, 1881, in Hatchford, Cobham, Surrey, England to Father Henry Arslett (1843-1909) and Mother Laura Mason (1847-1911). Arslett was one of 9 siblings with 4 brothers and 4 sisters. Arslett’s father was a “Binder/Thatcher” by trade and many of the older sons seemed to have followed in their father’s footsteps. As of the 1901 Census, Arslett is listed as a Bricklayer’s Laborer.
Arslett was married on July 4, 1909, to Alice Daisy Weller (1880-) at St. Andrew Church, Cobham, Surrey, England. It does not appear that Arslett had children. His Occupations are listed in 1911 and 1939 as a Carman to Builder and Builder’s Laborer respectively.
Arslett served in France with “C” Company, 6th Battalion of the Queen’s Royal West Surrey Regiment until April 10, 1917, when he was wounded with a gunshot wound to the temple during the Battle of Arras. He was then transferred to the No.41 Casualty Clearing station and eventually the No. 6 Convalescent Camp before going back to service with the Labor Corps. His length of service upon being wounded is listed as 4 months, so he is likely to have entered the theater in December 1916 or January 1917.
After returning from the war, and in addition to his occupation, Arslett served with the Esher Council Fire Department. Arslett also served in the Home Guard during WWII. Arslett passed away in June 1972 in Sutton, Surrey, England.
