    William Byers was born 5 May 1882 at Balmaghie, Kircudbrightshire, Scotland and was a Miner by occupation and a pre war member of the 102nd Rocky Mountain Rangers. He attested at Victoria, B.C. on 10 Nov 1914 in the 30th Battalion but served in the 15th B.C. Scottish, 17th Battalion and C.A.M.C. rising to Acting Sergeant Major. He was "Buried" on 20th May 1915 by a shell explosion in France, had foot problems, some pre-existing, exacerbated by service, he was discharged in early August 1918 as medically unfit.
