WW1 Distinguished Flying Cross Group of (3) Medals to a DH4 Pilot, RNAS / RAFOnly the WW1 Campaign Medals are named as usual.
Alan Rodman McAfee, born 8 July 1898, Surrey. Served in various units, Inns of Court OTC, RMLI, Royal Naval Air Service, Royal Air Force. Address 66/68 Duke Street, Grosvenor Square, W1, London.
Lieutenant, Acting Captain / Pilot, RAF. On 8th Aug 1918 with his Observer, Sergeant l. Murphy, had one confirmed kill of a Pfalz Scout whilst on a DH4 Bombing Raid in France between Rosieres and Chaulnes :
“Returning from Bomb raid on St. CRIST we dropped height to attack ground targets. At 4000 ft. a Pfalz scout passed at right angles 200 ft. below us between Rosieres and Chaulnes. Observer fire two double-drums into E.A. which dived down very steeply and crashed, bursting into flames on hitting the ground”. (Confirmed by Capt. Elliott and Sgt. England).
Flew Sopwith Triplanes, Sopwith Camels and DH4’s. He Served in 205 Squadron.
Distinguished Flying Cross awarded L.G. 3rd June 1919. No Citation.
In October 1932 he married Phyllis Brookes at Kensington. He died on 9th December 1961 at 16 Adelaide Court Hill Road, Hampstead, London.
