    Ernest James Newman, was born at Twford, Hampshire on 14th Oct 1883, a Porter by occupation. Joined 27 Feb 1899 and served on HMS Gurkha in WW1 until she was sunk by a mine on 08/02/17. Husband of E. M. A. Bedwell (formerly Newman), of Portsmouth. On 8 February 1917 the Ghurka, under the command of Lieutenant Harold G. Woolcombe-Boyce, struck a mine and sunk between Dungeness and the Royal Sovereign Light Vessel. At about 7.45pm, when the officers were about to sit down to their evening meal, a heavy explosion occurred at the forward part of the vessel.
