Description

Although Shōwa Emperor ascended in 1926, enthronement ceremonies in Japan are held 2-3 years later- sacred rice has to be planted and harvested, elaborate preparations to be made… Medal was issued to people associated with Enthronement planning, or participated in ceremonies. Medals were made and awarded from 1928 until 1930. Several companies made them [Osaka Mint (M), Yamasaki Company (Y), Shobindo Corporation (S) and rarest of them Japan Medal Corporation (N)]. Obverse depicts Imperial Throne, Banzai (10,000 years or long life) (
萬歳
) written below, and orange and cherry blossoms along the edge. Reverse features clouds, and is inscribed Shōwa 3, November, Enthronement Commemorative Medal (
大禮記念章
昭和三年十一月
).
MINT MARK “N”- Japan Medal Corporation.
Date: 1928 (although they were awarded as late as 1930).
Box: Paulownia wood covered in purple paper, gold gilt letters: Shōwa Enthronement Commemorative Medal (Shōwa Dairei Kinenshō
昭和大禮記念章
).
Condition: medal oxidized and discolored (needs cleaning), miniscule pitting on the silver, ribbon soiled.
Box: soiled and stained inside, small tear on white paper, minor loss of purple paper on several corners, hinge intact.
