    Description

    Welcome!
It is with pleasure that I'm offering a lovely pin /pendant by Raymond Sequaptewa, whose work ranks among the greatest contemporary Hopi artists and resides in the best museums and galleries. His work is always snapped up as soon as it's finished and there is a long waiting list to buy from him. This is a stunning piece  in traditional Hopi overlay technique with texturing on the lower level. The pin / pendant represents Katsinmana kachina who is a Hopi maiden who comes at the home dance, the last dance of the year with the Hernis katsina. She wears her hairstyle in the way of the unmarried Hopi women.  The way she plays her instrument during the dance is reminiscent of grinding corn and may suggest a special connection to the corn. I wonder if that is one reason Raymond Sequaptewa made this, since he was using a corn hallmark himself, suggesting he also has a special relationship to the corn. The piece is expertly executed and has a slightly convex shape with beautifully rounded edges, which are very appealing. I have a beautiful hand made Hopi chain, which is just great with it, but it is a little tight in the bail. I tease it through slowly and find it works to just leave the hook near the bottom rather than at the top.  The chain will be included and can be used with other things. It's a great hand made chain, 24" long, and it fits over the head so one needn't remove it from the piece if one wants to wear it primarily as a pendant. The chain alone weighs 8.6grams.
If you'd like to learn a lot about the Hopi Kachinas, I recommend the book by Jonathan JD Day, "Traditional Hopi Kachinas."
The pin / pendant measures 1-7/8" high and 1" wide. The piece alone, without the chain weighs 8.1grams. The locking pin mechanism works fine. It is hallmarked by Raymond Sequaptewa with the Hopi Guild mark, and the hallmark he began to use in 1974. It is not signed for silver content which is usual, but but acid tests for sterling silver .925. The condition is excellent vintage, wearable and collectible. This pin / pendant is a very fine piece which has a warm and generous quality which fills the heart with joy. It is fabulous
Raymond Sequaptewa is a medicine man, healer and visionary. His jewelry is dramatically one-of-a-kind, totally original in character. Surely it can never be confused with anyone else’s work. For Raymond, creating jewelry goes beyond artistry; his jewelry is prayers, thoughts to make life better.  His work is quite imaginative even magical. Healing is a significant theme although it isn’t always just about healing.  Sometimes, his work depicts things he sees in nature or human nature. There is a strong spiritual, even mystical quality pervading everything he does. Charles Loloma was Raymond Sequaptewa's mentor and teacher. His deep, artful, Hopi jewelry style is certainly reminiscent of old time Hopi greats like Charles Loloma and Preston Monongye who shared their vision of the world rather then conform to the accepted norm of the period. Like Monongye and Loloma, Sequaptewa takes Southwest Jewelry in a direction all his own, and is impressively unique. Raymond Seqaptewa's visions and his dreams appear in his art. As a result, Raymond Sequaptewa jewelry is a felt experience as much as it is visual. This particular piece of his has a joyful clarity of spirit.

Attributions on many of the old pieces of Native American jewelry are sometimes a moving target. I am sincerely committed to ongoing accuracy.
