Description

A large specimen of the rare mineral vorhauserite with willemite from Franklin, NJ. I had never heard of this mineral before so I looked it up on mindat. Sure enough, it's a legitimate mineral species on the Franklin Mining District mineral list. Vorhauserite is a medium to dark brown variety of serpentine which contains manganese(like so many other minerals from the Franklin Orebody). Further notations on the mindat page state that it is a variety of antigorite. Old labels referencing the collection of Dr. Lincoln Sherk and John Betts accompany the piece. Dr. Abraham Lincoln Sherk was a well-known mineral collector from the Camden, NJ area. There is a page on his label in the Mineralogical Record Label Archive. More information can be found on Dr. Sherk by searching his name. He passed away in 1969. Size is 4-1/2" x 2-1/2" x 2". Weight is 16.3 oz. or 462 gr. (note that the reference to chrysotile is incorrect).
