Description

Smithsonite,
Calcite, Dolomite,
Willemite
MASSIVE fluorescent
blue-pink Smithsonite with
veins of
orange Calcite, red Dolomite and
green, yellow to white
Willemite. Incredible blending of various colors are a feast to the eye
. Different colors of Willemite are due to
separate
intrusive events over time. All
UV photos are under shortwave ultraviolet (SW/UV).

This specimen is from the Puttapa Zinc Mine, Northern Flinders Ranges, South Australia, Australia.
The Puttapa Zinc Mine is
officially
"mined out" and no more specimens will be coming out.

You must use a
good
quality
SW/LW-UV lamp to see all the colors. Crack it open, who knows what fluorescent colors you might find inside.

ecimen was collected by mineralman in 2015.
This is a very choice X-large cabinet size specimen.
Compare natural light photo of specimen on a US one dollar bill for scale.
Specimen AUS178 is 5.30"x 4.50"x 3.50" and weighs
5 pounds  4.1 ounces.

NOTES ON ULTRAVIOLET:
The higher quality the Ultraviolet (UV) source, the better fluorescent minerals look. Critical factors include;
filtration (Hoya glass vs Plastic filter or lens),
lamp wattage, bulb composition, lamp construction, wave length and distance of lamp to specimen. For best results with any UV source, observe against a black, non-fluorescent, non-reflective background, in complete darkness with eyes adapted. To dark adapt your eye's, you must be in complete darkness for approximately seven (7) minutes. The photos here were taken using a WAY-TOO-COOL Shortwave (SW), Midwave (MW) or Longwave (LW) lamps, metered and exposed to show fluorescent response to its best advantage
.
The more powerful the ultraviolet lamp, the brighter the fluorescent response.
I will indicate which wavelength is
appropriate for the particular specimen being offered at auction and wavelength (SW/MW,LW) used as well as the wattage of UV lamp used for photography.
I use a 9 watt WAY-TOO-COOL lamp to illuminate most specimens.
