Description
This is a really interesting Dugway Geode! The specimen is really cool because 1) the flower-like formation of the chalcedony and 2) the intense BRIGHT GREEN fluorescence of the chalcedony under short wave.It contains brightly fluorescent chalcedony ( SW green)as noted in photos 7 - 10 . Some of the rhyolite matrix also fluoresces a cherry red color under SW ( photos 9 - 10 ) .
Dugway Geodes are volcanic(igneous) in origin and were formed in Western Utah approx. 6 -8 million years ago. The primary mineral, gray in color, is rhyolite. Sometimes , as with this specimen, trapped gases in the rhyolite form cavities or geodes. Ground water circulation over millions of years allows minerals to precipitate within these cavities. The most common crystal lining , as with this specimen, is quartz . Other minerals found within the cavities may include aragonite, calcite , agate, amethyst ,dolomite, barite, light blue or white chalcedony. Rarely a black mineral (unknown to anyone I have asked, probably some form of carbon) can be deposited adding even further beauty to the specimen.
Most Dugways are found 1 - 4 feet below the surface and extracted with picks and shovels. They are cleaned , cut and then polished . These geodes typically range in size from 1 - 12 inches. Most are about 1 -3 ". Larger decorative specimens are much less common. No two are ever exactly the same!
If you have a short wave UV lamp the specimen fluoresces VERY BRIGHTLY ... see photos 7 - 10 .
SW photos taken with a Super Bright UV Lamp.
This specimen displays a lesser, but interesting dull green and white fluorescence under LW UV light . Please see photo 12 . LW photos taken with 36 W Way Too Cool lamp.
All geodes hold special energy. Geodes are said to help one attract compatible friends and lovers. They help strengthen people and bring them together in harmony. Geodes are soothing, relaxing and good for meditation.
It was recently brought to my attention that the claim for the site of excavating these specimens is no longer available for mining. Therefore anticipate a substantial rise in prices in the near future!
