Description
This lot is for 2(two) items. Great Britain issued BRITISH WAR MEDAL, for WWI. The large and the small size medal are identical is detail and what is shown. Both show King George V with a Latin inscription about the king, similar to what you would find on coins. They are both made of silver, with the large one measuringapprox. 36mm, and the small one, 18-19mm. The reverse shows the dates of the First World War, 1914-1918, and St. George on horseback, trampling the eagle shield of the central powers (Germany and Austro-Hungarian Empires), with a skull and cross bones. The recipient's service number, rank, name, and unit were inscribed on the rim of the large medal(188402 GNR. J.J. BYRNE. RA). This silver medal was awarded to officers and men of the British & Imperial Forces who entered a theatre of war(an active area of fighting) or served overseas, perhaps as a garrison soldier, between 5 August 1914 and 11 November 1918. The medal was later extended to cover 1919-1920 and service in mine clearing at sea as well as participation in operations in N. & S. Russia, Eastern Baltic, Siberia, and Black and Caspian Seas.
They would have originally had a ribbon with them, which is missing from both pieces. The ribbon attachment bar and pin are still with the small one, but only the brad attached to the medal itself is still with the larger one. Both are original and not cleaned with varying shades of silver and gray and toning over the surface. The larger one has several pecks on the front on the King's jaw and neck, and the field around it. Also, a couple of contact marks on the horse on the reverse. Not too unusual for the the large size silver piece. The small piece has no noticeable marks.
