    Description

This is an extremely fine British Victorian era South Africa 1877-79 medal with bar ‘1879’ that remains in excellent condition. The planchet is made of genuine silver and bears the profile of Queen Victoria facing left with words ‘VICTORIA’ and ‘REGINA’ along the edge at the 9 and 3 o’clock positions respectively. The reverse features a crouching lion on a plinth in front of a protea bush with a single flower. The medal is inscribed ‘SOUTH AFRICA’ around the top perimeter and has a military trophy consisting of a Zulu ox-hide shield and four crossed assegais in the exergue. The planchet is without any nicks or edge bruising and exhibits very sharp detail that has not been softened by polishing. It possesses a very attractive age toned patina and is suspended from a short length of correct ribbon. The rim is hand engraved in the correct style to ‘885 Pte D. HEFFERNAN 2/21st FOOT’ who is confirmed on Forsyth’s South Africa 1877-79 Medal Roll.
