    Description

    Length: 48.5”
    Width: 3.75”
Feed your wild side with this swing tie, for which primal and unrestrained refer both to subject and style. The figures on this splatter-dye tie are difficult to discern at first glance, a swirling scene in which packs of fierce wolves descend up proud stags amid a sylvan glen, circling round for the kill. Made by Beau Brummell and sold through O’Neill & Co. of Baltimore, MD, c.1940s/early 1950s. Excellent vintage condition, unevenness to color on tail.
Irish immigrant Thomas J. O’Neill (1849-1919) arrived in the USA at a young age with little to his name. Known for his flashy clothing and a particularly bushy red mustache, he became a genuine entrepreneur and soon created one of the most important department stores in Baltimore. He was a charitable man, giving much to the Catholic Church (he credited his store’s survival in the Great Baltimore Fire of 1904 to the prayers of a group of nuns), and left many shares of his business to his employees upon his death. The store closed at the end of 1954 after 72 years in business.
